October 24 2014

  • Continued to experiment with mowed area of KR Bluestem, using a blow torch in an area around 30x50 square feet. (This experiment did not fully succeed as green sprouts were seen a few days later.)

  • Refreshed Hummingbird feeders. It as been cold and not many Hummingbirds have been seen. Reduced the number of feeders to 6.
  • Saw Great Blue Heron 
  • Continued to remove KR Bluestem by hand around the house and along driveways

  • Refreshed Hummingbird feeders
  • Mowed KR Bluestem in small area below old corral
  • Covered mowed area with black plastic covering about 375 square feet. (a few days later, the KR was still very green, the black plastic acting more like a greenhouse than a weed killer, the "solarization" weed killing technique works best in the summer months)

Carertakers experiment with different ways of removing KR Bluestem grass. Mowing does not work to remove it in the fall, but it does allow for over seeding and using Horticultural Vinegar too slow it down, especially before a freeze. Contacts with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will assist with other methods of removal when the temperature is condusive to special treatments.

  • Removed KR Bluestem around water tank in upper pasture by hand.
  • Planted 25x15 square foot area with Blue Grama and Caliche seed mix from native American Seed which consists of: Blue Grama, Little Bluestem, Buffalo Grass, Sideoats Grama,Green Sprangletop, Prairie Wildrye,Blue Grama, Sand Dropseed, Sand Lovegrass, Cane Bluestem, Texas Cupgrass, White Tridens, Indiangrass, Halls Panicum, Curly Mesquite

  • Refreshed Hummingbird feeders
  • Finalized installation of South Bluff water well
  • Cleaned out muck from water tank in upper pasture, letting it overflow onto the ground using a siphon hose.
  • Removed KR Bluestem rom around water tank in upper pasture
  • Planted Blue Grama Grass seeds
